Saltburn Rutway Survey

Survey work at Saltburn has continued this year with another foray around the bottom of Huntcliff to try and map all the surviving rutways before they are completely eroded away by the sea.

Rutways are tracks cut into the rock of the foreshore to enable horse-drawn carts to be taken along the beach, and probably date to the 17th, 18th and 19th centuries.

This year we have determined that the maze of rutways close to Old Saltburn gives way to only two or three routes leading further east towards Skinningrove, fuelling debate over whether the rutways were used primarily to service the Saltburn alum house, collect seaweed and ironstone from the shore, or as a route between the two settlements.
